Why English Football may introduce Scottish Clubs’ to protect against a European Super League (youtube short doc)
The prospect of a European Super League seems to have quietened down in the last couple of years. However, it is far from clear that the forces behind the move are not regathering their resources to make another pass. Looking at it from the perspective of super club owners, it makes a certain amount of business sense and for that reason, it feels like folly to assume that it could never happen in the future.

The Premier league for one, will know this and part of their strategic remit must be, one would imagine, how do we ensure it does not happen? One of the ways to go about this, is to strengthen the Premier League further, making it less clear to England’s biggest clubs that there is sufficient financial benefit in making the jump. How do you do that? Well, having a couple more giant sized clubs in one of the UKs most vibrant cities helps. Of course, I am talking about Glasgow’s old firm here, who offer huge fan bases, legacy and a good sliceof overseas interest.
But perhaps the more interesting question is how this can revamp the sleeping giant that is Scottish football that is currently tied into a TV deal which severely limits the spending power of the league and its ability to produce teams that will threaten European honours like Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts have done in yers gone by.
What is also becoming clear is the gap between the Premier League and the Championship, where we are seeing teams that are promoted routinely dropping back down with a whimper such is the chasm that seems to grow ever wider. In order to stave off competition, the Premier League must remain competitive and some new blood may have a part to play in that.
This piece examines how by combining the two football league structures, new opportunities can be created while at the same time, attempting to approach any move with a certain amount of sensitivity as for sure, many fans on either side of the border would resist even the notion of such a move. But hopefully it provides some food for thought, or failing that, some light entertainment. This has been viewed over 100,000 times so far by football fans in The UK and across the world and we hope that you also enjoy it.
